Lessons Learned from Respectful Pruning and Fungal Disease Management

At Bodegas Atrevino, a passion for sustainable viticulture and respect for tradition are fundamental pillars of our winery philosophy.

Recently, we had the privilege of participating in the course “Respectful Pruning and Fungal Diseases of the Vine,” organized by the Canary Islands PDO and Ycoden Daute Isora DO, together with 60 winegrowers from various islands.

The training was given by experts Roc Gramona and Vicenç Canals from the Pruning Academy. This course has provided us with valuable tools and knowledge to tackle one of the greatest challenges of modern viticulture:

The short life of vines

One of the central themes of the course was the alarming decline in the longevity of vines in modern vineyards. Unlike the century-old vines that our ancestors cultivated using traditional methods, many of today’s vines barely exceed 30 years of life. This phenomenon is due to various intensive cultivation practices that negatively affect the health and vitality of the plants.

Respectful Pruning: A Return to Tradition

Respectful pruning is emerging as a key solution for extending the life of vines. This technique, in contrast to aggressive pruning practices, seeks to maintain the natural balance of the plant, respecting its sap flow and preventing unnecessary wounds.

By reducing the intensity of pruning and adapting it to the individual needs of each vine, better health and greater resistance to disease are promoted. In addition to pruning, proper management of fungal diseases is essential. These diseases, which are becoming increasingly common, can weaken vines and shorten their lifespan if not addressed correctly.

The course taught by Roc Gramona and Vicenç Canals provided us with strategies for the prevention and treatment of these diseases, based on balancing the vineyard ecosystem and using less invasive practices.
The experts’ experience reminded us of the wisdom of ancestral practices. The centuries-old vineyards that still exist on our islands are a testament to the fact that nature-friendly cultivation and the use of traditional techniques can ensure the longevity of the vineyard.

At Bodegas Atrevino, we are inspired by this legacy, cultivating century-old ungrafted grapes from family vineyards with passion and respect for nature. We are committed to producing wines that reflect the essence of our volcanic landscape and our rich heritage.

Participating in this course is another step in our constant pursuit of excellence, sustainability, and respect for tradition. We are convinced that by implementing these practices, we can not only ensure the health and longevity of our vineyards, but also offer higher quality wines, full of soul and character.
