The Canary Islands, with their volcanic origins and subtropical climate, are a paradise for viticulture. The combination of volcanic soils, trade winds, and a wide variety of microclimates allows for the cultivation of grape varieties that are unique in the world. Tenerife, in particular, stands out for its winemaking tradition, with vineyards stretching from the coast to the high mountain areas. Phylloxera has not affected the islands, allowing for the preservation of centuries-old ungrafted vines.
In the heart of the island, where tradition meets innovation, Bodegas Atrevino invites you on a sensory journey through its soulful wines. This family-owned winery, located in the midlands of the north of the island, in La Matanza de Acentejo, is much more than a wine producer; it is a legacy of generations, a story of love for the land, and a commitment to excellence.
A History of Tradition and Transformation
The Alonso family, winegrowers and winemakers, have cultivated their passion for wine for generations. Initially inspired by the rich traditions of Bordeaux, they have managed to combine ancestral practices with modern techniques to create wines that reflect the essence of Tenerife’s volcanic landscape.
The winery, now led by Lázaro Alonso Alonso, represents the fourth generation of a family dedicated to winemaking.
Lázaro’s visit to Bordeaux in the 1990s was key to the modernization of the winery, which finally managed to combine tradition with innovation, gaining recognition locally and now in foreign markets.
Unique Vineyards in a Volcanic Environment
The vineyards of Bodegas Atrevino extend across the slopes of La Matanza de Acentejo, El Sauzal, and Tacoronte, 700 meters above sea level. These volcanic soils, unique in the world, give the wines a distinctive minerality and character.
The century-old ungrafted vines are a treasure of the winery, allowing for total interaction between the plant and the soil, enhancing the uniqueness of its wines.
Viticulture is sustainable, respecting the landscape, historical, and cultural heritage of the region. The harvest is done manually, selecting the grapes at their optimal point of ripeness.
Our Wines: A Reflection of the Terroir in a Bottle
Bodegas Atrevino offers a selection of wines that capture the essence of Tenerife in every bottle. Its wines are characterized by varietal and plot vinification, respecting the oenological potential of each grape.
Atrevino Blanco: A dry white wine made mainly from Listán Blanco de Canarias and Albillo Criollo. Twenty percent of the wine is aged on lees in oak barrels. It offers citrus, floral, and mineral notes, with fresh acidity and a salty finish.
Atrevino Tinto (Listán Negro): A traditional red wine made exclusively from the local Listán Negro variety. It is characterized by its cherry red color, red fruit aromas, and herbaceous notes.
Atrevino Tinto: A red wine that combines Listán Negro (70%), Tempranillo (25%), and Negramoll (5%). It is aged briefly in used oak barrels. Its aromas of ripe red fruits, spicy and balsamic notes stand out.
At Bodegas Atrevino, each bottle is a tribute to this unique land, where wine is much more than a drink: it is the expression of a landscape, a culture, and a shared passion.
